Biography
Henry Sutter is a drummer and improviser based in Brooklyn, NY recognized for his unique fusion of jazz and rock styles of play. After seeing street performers play on paint buckets at the age of 2, Henry proclaimed himself a drummer and has since studied with a myriad of teachers, most recently including world renowned jazz drummer, Ari Hoenig.
Originally from Athens, GA, Henry immersed himself in a vibrant community of musicians from an early age. His passion for music flourished through participation in Camp Amped, a youth music program hosted by the non-profit organization Nuçi’s Space. Here, amidst a supportive network of fellow musicians, Henry not only honed his craft but also gained invaluable insight into the realities of a professional musician's life, particularly its mental health challenges.

Following his graduation with a B.A.S. in Hispanic Studies from Lewis & Clark College (Portland, OR) in 2020, Henry returned to Athens to collaborate with former camp peers, eventually assuming roles both as an employee and instructor at Nuçi’s Space. His experience as an instructor sparked a deep-seated passion for teaching, inspiring him to pursue further learning while concurrently sharing his expertise through private lessons.
In the summer of 2022, driven by a desire to explore the realms of jazz and improvisation, Henry made the bold decision to relocate to New York City. Currently based in Brooklyn, he is actively involved in several musical projects, including his bands Maxuma, Slowbird, and Angel Barn. Additionally, Henry is engaged in improvisational endeavors alongside esteemed dancer/actress K.J. Holmes and under the mentorship of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Henry Threadgill, pushing the boundaries of his artistic expression.
